Check with your physician to make sure you are healthy before beginning any new exercise routine, including hiking. This is just a precautionary measure to make sure there are no pre-existing health concerns you need to be aware of. You do not want to find out you have a heart condition or any other medical problem when you are five miles from civilization.
  1. Never hike alone.
  2. Always bring twice as much water as you think you will need.
  3. If you have a cell phone bring it with you.
  4. Pay attention to weather forecasts and do not hike in the heat or bad weather.
  5. Bring a map and a GPS or compass for navigation.
  6. Bring a snack or lunch depending on the duration of your hike.
  7. Protect yourself from the sun by bringing a broad brimmed hat and sun block.
  8. Protect yourself from insects by bringing insect repellent.
  9. Stay on the trail and respect the environment by not taking rocks, carving trees, etc.
  10. Do not litter and pack out any trash you bring or find on the trail.
  11. Keep your pets under control and on a leash at all times.
  12. Bring plenty of water for your pets as well!
